Coffee Maker Analysis + Redesign
2022
This project involves disassembling a standard coffee maker to analyze its internal components, materials, and assembly methods. The goal is to assess the total material usage and identify areas of excess or inefficiency. Using this analysis, a redesigned version is proposed—one that minimizes material use, simplifies construction, and prioritizes ease of disassembly for repair or recycling. The final design aims to reduce environmental impact by extending product lifespan and discouraging disposable design practices.
Impact factor points in product design are key areas where design decisions have a big effect on cost, production time, material use, and overall product performance. These include choices like: materials, number of parts, ease of assembly, and how easily a product can be repaired or recycled. By identifying and optimizing these points early, designers can reduce waste, lower manufacturing costs, and create products that are easier to make, maintain, and sustainably dispose of.
